The Bergen County Historical Society will be sponsoring a day of living history and scholarly presentations to celebrate the 242nd Anniversary of the British Invasion and American Retreat at Historic New Bridge Landing.
At 12:30 pm by the bridge BCHS President, historian, and re-enactor Jim Smith will read The American Crisis. Starting at the Steuben House at 1 pm BCHS Past President Deborah Powell will give a walking tour of the Zabriskie Tide Mill and tell of its importance to New Bridge. In the Steuben House at 2pm military historian and author Todd Braisted will give a lecture on the role of the militia during the American Revolution. At 3pm join BCHS Vice President Kate Reilly for a walking tour of the Bridge that Save a Nation. The tour will explain how imperative it was for Washington to cross the Hackensack River before he could cross the Delaware.
The Demarest House will be open for tours throughout the day as will the Campbell-Christie House where visitors may purchase refreshments for an additional cost and visit the gift shop. The BCHS library will also be selling books and pamphlets that are duplicates from the library's collection. Behind the Campbell-Christie House the society as created and authentic out-kitchen where cooking demonstrations will be taking place.
Activities for children will include solider drills led by Revolutionary War re-enactors who will also be present throughout the site to answer questions and demonstrate life of the common solider and camp follower.
