Make Mom the Star

What can you give the woman who has given you everything? Try something simple that will touch her heart.

When Mother’s Day rolls around, your Mom will likely expect to be “remembered.” You know she deserves the very best, but of course, she’ll appreciate whatever kind gesture comes her way. That’s just Mom being Mom. So what can you give the woman who has given you everything? Try something simple that will touch her heart. Here are some ideas:

Flower power—You can pick up an arrangement (roses, tulips and orchids are always a sure bet) at any neighborhood florist. Or try something different and bring her pretty petals to plant in the garden. Garden centers at places like Stokes Farm in Old Tappan and Rohsler’s Nursery in Allendale are stocked with bedding plants, pots and other supplies.

Treat her tastebuds—If you’re not preparing a feast for her, be sure Mom starts her day with something delicious. Many Bergen restaurants offer Mother’s Day brunch specials such as Bibi’z in Westwood and Ivy Inn in Hasbrouck Heights. Haven Riverfront Restaurant and Bar also offers brunch but combines it with a knockout view of New York that will certainly impress any mother.

Take a hike—The weather’s warmer, so bring Mom outside for a walk in nature. The Ramapo Valley Reservation in Mahwah and the Palisades Interstate Park in Alpine are popular spots with rewarding views. Englewood’s Flat Rock Brook Nature Center, the Tenafly Nature Center and Saddle River County Park, which runs from Ridgewood to Saddle Brook, are also places you and Mom can enjoy.

Pamper her—The gift of relaxation is priceless, so treat Mom to a spa day. From a massage at Araya Rebirth in Ridgewood to facials at Fountain Spa in Ramsey or Hackensack to salon services at Moxie Blowdry & Beauty Bar (Englewood, Fair Lawn, Montvale, Ridgewood), there are assorted ways to pamper and primp her.

Get creative—Spend a fun day painting a masterpiece while drinking a glass or two of wine. Pinot’s Palette has locations in Edgewater and Ridgewood, while Uptown Art in Westwood, Painting On Park in Rutherford and Painting with a Twist in Glen Rock also offer the friendly environment for painters and sippers.
