From sheep shearing and stand-up comics to jewelry stamping and Motown legends, there’s something for everyone this month in Bergen County.




MAY 4 Your wool coat kept you warm all winter, now find out where that soft material came from. Head to the Bergen County Zoo in Paramus for a SHEEP SHEARING demonstration, held every 45 minutes from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Special children’s crafts and story times also will be offered during the FREE event. MAY 5 Head to the hub of the Pascack Valley for Westwood’s Springfest Fair from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Veterans Park. Nearly 100 artists and crafters as well as 25 antique dealers will set up shop around the park for visitors to browse. Food vendors will also be on site. Admission: FREE. MAY 9 Make your mark and a piece of jewelry at SIP & (METAL) STAMP, hosted by Creative Den in Glen Rock. From 7 to 9 p.m., you can join Janet of Inspired Between the Pines in creating your own metal stamped necklace. The cost is $55, which includes a pendant and gold- or silver-plated chain. MAY 9 Why sing along with the radio when you can see and hear THE TEMPTATIONS AND THE FOUR TOPS in person? The legendary Motown vocal groups will take the stage at Englewood’s Bergen Performing Arts Center at 8 p.m. and perform songs from their extensive catalog of hits. Tickets range from $39 to $199. MAY 10–11 Stand-up comic EMMY BLOTNICK will tickle your funny bone during her performances at Bananas Comedy Club in Hasbrouck Heights. This queen of comedy has appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Conan and in her own half-hour special on Comedy Central. MAY 12 Ready, set, hike! Youth football players gearing up for next season can show off their skills at the NUC SPORTS COMBINE AND SHOWCASE, held from 4 to 9 p.m. at Indian Hills High School in Oakland. It’s open to student-athletes in the 2019–2024 high school graduation classes. Players will be evaluated based on drills and agility at their respective positions. MAY 14 Is the next Einstein or Edison in our midst? Find out at Bergen Community College’s fifth annual SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS (STEM) CONFERENCE. From 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., BCC’s Paramus campus will showcase the talents of the brightest STEM faculty, staff and undergraduate students from 44 colleges across the state. MAY 15 Hey, ladies: Join WNBC-TV’s Pat Battle for the YWCA Bergen County’s WALKING THE TALK GALA 2019: OUR TIME IS NOW. The program, scheduled from 6 to 10:30 p.m. at Seasons in Washington Township, will celebrate contributions to women’s empowerment, equality and social justice and includes dinner and drinks, dancing, auctions and more. Tickets are $175 and can be purchased at ywcabergencounty.org.

MAY 17 Pay tribute to our armed forces at the MILITARY APPRECIATION MONTH CEREMONY, starting at 12:30 p.m. at the Bergen County Administration Building in Hackensack. Admission is FREE, but RSVP is required via email at  veterans@co.bergen.nj.us.

MAY 18 Celebrate the music of composer Leonard Bernstein at A TOTAL EMBRACE: BERNSTEIN AT 100, a concert featuring the Ars Musica Chorale, Adelphi Orchestra, the Encore Young Artists soloists and the New Jersey State Children’s Choir. The program begins at 7 p.m. at West Side Presbyterian Church in Ridgewood. Presale tickets: $30 for adults, $25 for seniors; door tickets: $35 for adults, $30 for seniors. MAY 18 Attention all dog lovers and their beloved fur babies: Cresskill High School is hosting the BARK FOR EDUCATION canine carnival and adoption event from 12 to 4 p.m. The event will feature a doggie parade, professional trainers, vendors, rescue groups, contests for you and your pooch, music, raffles, face painting and other activities for the entire family. MAY 19 Join the renowned Waldwick Band for its MEMORIAL DAY SALUTE concert from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Mahwah Public Library. The volunteer organization’s repertoire includes original compositions, orchestral transcriptions, big band favorites and much more. Admission: FREE. MAY 19 Celebrate Mother Nature and enjoy the fresh air at the sixth annual EARTHFEST OVERPECK, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Overpeck Park 
in Leonia. Presented by the Bergen County Parks Department and Hackensack Riverkeeper, the event will feature a science show for kids, wildlife presentations, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, live music, food trucks, more than 50 nonprofit vendors and much more. MAY 22 Who said you can’t learn at a mall? Bring your pre-K children to the indoor play area of The Outlets at Bergen Town Center for a STORY-TIME READING SESSION. The two 20-minute classes (9:30 and 10 a.m.) will be led by instructors from the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood. Classes are FREE, and registration is not required. MAY 27 Lace up your sneakers and stretch out your muscles for the annual RIDGEWOOD RUN at Veteran’s Field. Hosted by North Jersey Masters, the races begin and end at Veteran’s Park along Linwood Avenue. Participants can enter a 5K, 10K, wheelchair 10K, fun run and elite mile races. MAY 29 The Jersey Shore isn’t the only place with cool lighthouses. Author, photographer and American history lecturer Kevin Woyce will present HUDSON RIVER LIGHTHOUSES at 7 p.m. at the Mahwah Public Library, taking guests on a journey through the seven lighthouses that still remain along New York’s main waterway.
