The Shrewsbury Chorale invites you to celebrate the Christmas holiday with a concert of inspiring choral music entitled Christmas Past. The Chorale will present an uplifting program of familiar carols as well as less known holiday fare, all in gorgeous settings by masters of the choral genre. Joshua Anand Slater will conduct his first concert as permanent Music Director. New accompanist Fiona Smith Sutherland, also of Tower Hill Church, will showcase her considerable musical talents on the organ.
The concert will open with three short carols. A Christmas Cantata, featuring soprano and baritone soloists with chorus and organ, will be among the program highlights. After an ethereal opening, this piece, written in 1953 by Swiss composer Arthur Honegger, weaves traditional carols into the musical texture. Next, Three Carol-Anthems by English composer Herbert Howells will be performed a cappella. The baritone soloist rejoins the chorus for Fantasia on Christmas Carols, written in 1912 by English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. English folk carols are intermingled with quotations of other carols heard in the organ accompaniment. The concert will close with an audience sing-a-long of three familiar carols.
Christmas Past will be performed on Sunday, December 8, 2019 at 3 PM in the beautiful medieval setting of St. George’s by the River Church, 7 Lincoln Ave., Rumson, NJ.
