Peter Bradley: Beyond the Fields of Color

Date/Time

September 16, 2019 to November 3, 2019

Description

The artist Peter Bradley has had a long and storied career. In 1968, as Associate Director of the prestigious Perls Galleries in New York City, he was one of the first black art dealers in the United States. In 1971 at 31, Peter curated The De Luxe Show in Houston at the request of John de Menil. The exhibition is widely considered to be the first fully racially integrated art show in the US and changed the way artists of color were represented. In 1972 he had his first of six exhibits at the André Emmerich Gallery both in New York and Zurich.

First and foremost, Peter is an artist – a painter and a sculptor. Over a fifty-plus year career his paintings have ranged from monochromatic, serene spray paintings to bold, exuberant pieces replete with textures, fearless color choices, and broad gestures, all built on a base of new raw canvas stained with Golden acrylic paints and mediums. He has supported Golden products since their inception and through their use continues to advance the language of abstraction and color field painting.

Peter’s work is in the permanent collections of a number of museums, including The Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. In 2017, he was the Artist in Residence at the Squire Foundation in Santa Barbara.

With the recent interest in black artists over 70, attention to Peter Bradley’s work and career is timely and significant. He continues to paint and sculpt daily at his home studio in a historic 18th Century stone house in Saugerties, NY.

Oyster Point Vice President Kevin Barry and Oyster Point Gallery Curator Ellen Martin, in collaboration with Emerge Gallery of Saugerties, NY, are pleased to present a collection of new work by Peter Bradley. The exhibit will open on September 6, 2019 from 6 – 8 p.m. and run through November 3, 2019.
