You don’t need to go far to see amazing fall color and views in our counties. Try these 9 spots.
4 Leaf Peeping

Nothing says fall in the Northeast like the changing leaves, and no month captures the majesty of fall color like October. You’re probably heading out to Halloween events and trying out seasonal recipes, but autumn isn’t really in full swing until you do some leaf peeping.

And you don’t need to leave (or leaf, if you’ll forgive the pun) Morris and Essex counties to take in those views. Here are a few local spots where you can see the season in all its glory, close to home.

Black River Park, Chester. The Cooper Gristmill is something special surrounded by changing leaves, and the water adds even more ambiance.

Branch Brook Park, Newark. Though most often a springtime destination for its unbelievable cherry blossoms, you’re in for even more color when you stop by in the fall.

Eagle Rock Reservation, West Orange. The sprawling view of the NYC skyline you get here at the Essex County 9/11 Memorial will also show off a patchwork of autumn beauty this time of year.

Farny State Park, Rockaway. This park is known for its red, white and black oaks, which are all spectacular in the autumn.

Frelinghuysen Arboretum, Morristown. It’s always a good time to stop by this beautiful spot, with its historical buildings and gardens, but during fall it’s a rare treat.

Lake Hopatcong, Roxbury. See the largest lake in the state become a mirror for the reds, yellows and oranges of the trees around it.

South Mountain Reservation, West Orange. This park covers over 2,000 acres and all of them are dressed in their autumn best right now. You’ll find many scenic overlooks and hikes for all levels here.

South Mountain Reservation Fairy Trail, Millburn. If you want some extra magic with your leaves, stop by this popular, kid-friendly attraction for a short trail filled with carefully created “fairy houses.”

Tourne County Park, Denville. Panoramic views at this park will show you the NYC skyline and miles of beautiful trees.
