Blizzard Beach Bum
A Belmar jokester brings a Shore twist and sense of humor to a snow day.

Tradition dictates that one builds a sandcastle at a beach, but you don’t need to limit yourself to that, particularly when Mother Nature piles on lots of other materials. Belmar resident John Walsh took advantage of last month’s blizzard to create “Benny Belmar,” a beach-y snowman. Walsh says he was inspired to make Benny because “not many people get to see snow on the beach, and there was something surreal about it.” He adds, “If it hadn’t been so windy and brutally cold, I would’ve built Benny right on the sand. Instead, I brought the beach to him: I raided the garage for a beach chair, umbrella and boogie board.” Benny was a hit both on Instagram and to passersby: “Seeing someone stop, laugh or take a picture is what really fulfills me,” says Walsh.
