Sixth through eighth graders at Holy Cross School excelled in Sea Bright Library’s inaugural poetry contest for local students. In preparation for the contest, Holy Cross teacher Maryjane Gallo reviewed varied forms of figurative language as well as the use of alliteration, similes and metaphors with the students. For their efforts, the students were presented a Sea Bright Library tote bag as well as gift certificates to Gracie and the Dudes local ice cream shop and Barnes & Noble.

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity in Monmouth County hosted its annual A Taste for Homes Wine & Food Tasting at the Oyster Point Hotel in Red Bank. The program included samples from the county’s top restaurants, wineries, breweries and other shops as well as a silent auction and raffles. Proceeds from the event support Habitat’s affordable new home construction builds and projects.
Making New Friends

Representatives from Freehold-based Branning Collision Centers and the United Way of Monmouth and Ocean Counties spent a day with children at the YMCA of Western Monmouth County in Freehold. The volunteers played board games and dodgeball with kids and helped them with homework and reading assignments.

Long Branch-based Chef Covas Catering recently hosted a spaghetti dinner at the Shrewsbury Firehouse in partnership with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Woman of the Year campaign. Dinner attendees enjoyed live entertainment, raffles and great food. All proceeds from the event benefit LLS, whose mission is to cure blood cancers and improve the quality of life for patients and their families.

The Leon Hess Cancer Center Council hosted the 24th Annual Power of Pink Luncheon, an event that benefits Monmouth Medical Center’s Leon Hess Cancer Center. The event featured a keynote address from renowned makeup artist and bestselling author Bobbi Brown and also honored Louis Zinterhofer, M.D., who served as chairman of pathology at MMC for three decades.
