Owner Chrissy Valerio was a student in such a program who took classes regularly. Inspired by her results, she opened the Shrewsbury franchise in September 2008.

The Bar Method Shrewsbury is a fitness studio that teaches The Bar Method, a workout program that is popular in studios around the country. Owner Chrissy Valerio was a student in such a program who took classes regularly. Inspired by her results, she opened the Shrewsbury franchise in September 2008.  

WHAT IS THE BAR METHOD?

It’s an intense one-hour, non-impact workout that integrates interval training, isometrics and dance conditioning to quickly burn fat and build muscle. The idea is that you use your own body weight to create resistance and work the major muscle groups. Stretching is also an important part of the workout—we stretch at intervals throughout the hour to increase flexibility. A ballet bar is used for much of the class, although you don’t have to have any prior dance training. We also incorporate straps for stretching and light free weights to build strength.

WHAT MAKES THE WORKOUT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER EXERCISE OPTIONS OUT THERE?

The Bar Method has a big focus on safety. The founder, Burr Leonard, designed the workout with the help of physical therapists so that it wouldn’t cause injuries. What also makes it unique is the commitment to individual attention, since proper form is so important. It’s almost as if you’re getting personal training in a group setting.

WHAT WILL THE BAR METHOD DO FOR YOUR BODY?

It will give you a lean, sculpted physique and also help improve posture and flexibility. My students tell me they notice definition in their arms, legs, glutes and abs that they’ve never seen before.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO OPEN A BAR METHOD STUDIO?

I started out as a professional dancer and then worked as an esthetician. After taking Bar Method classes, I noticed amazing changes in my body that I hadn’t seen since my dancing days. I felt compelled to bring the program to Monmouth because there was nothing like this in the area.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Seeing how my clients’ bodies transform keeps me inspired. I’ve had students tell me that the Bar Method changed their lives. I feel so blessed to share what I’ve gained from the workout.

DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR OTHER PEOPLE WHO ASPIRE TO OPEN THEIR OWN BUSINESS?

Your heart really needs to be in it because it’s definitely a lot of work. Starting your own business can be daunting, but I think it’s important to follow your dreams. Many people will tell you it’s too risky, but if it’s something you believe in, go for it.
