By age 10, Roberto Cuan knew what he wanted to be when he grew up: a lawyer. Drawn to the challenge of criminal law, Roberto was told there is no better place to start than the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. He pursued the opportunity with unwavering determination and ultimately earned a position at an office that accepts less than 1% of applicants.
What followed was an extraordinary education in the practice of law. From low-level crimes to high-level felonies, he gained firsthand experience in the courtroom and developed the skills that would become the foundation of his legal career.
Today, after 25 years as a solo practitioner, Roberto continues to take on select criminal defense matters, particularly white-collar cases. His practice, however, has evolved to focus primarily on real estate and business law, including large commercial transactions, landlord-tenant matters, real estate acquisitions and corporate entity formations. He also represents private lenders, businesses, and restaurants and assists individuals, families and businesses with estate planning. He brings the same meticulous attention to detail to every matter he handles.
Supported by two paralegals, Roberto intentionally keeps his practice boutique so he can provide highly individualized service. Clients have direct access to him and, perhaps most importantly, know they will be heard.
“Every client has different motivations,” he says. “It’s critical to listen.” Rather than approaching a matter as a formulaic transaction, Roberto takes the time to understand what each client wants to accomplish, then explains the options including their advantages and disadvantages in plain language. Ultimately, the decision belongs to the client, but he always advises with their best interest at heart. That combination of experience, meticulous preparation and personalized attention reflects Roberto’s commitment to providing every client with an advocate who is truly focused on their individual needs.
