There are some things that should certainly be left to professionals—dental work, for instance, or running electrical wire in your house—but performance isn’t one of them. As anyone who’s ever belted out “Don’t Stop Believing” in the shower or joined in with friends when the radio plays a jam knows, singing can be a lot of fun no matter your skill level.

Whether you’re a beginner looking to get in some public practice, you’re returning to an old passion or you just feel like having a great time with your crew, the local scene can accommodate. Check out these open mics for those who want to get their singer-songwriter on (many of them also welcome comedians and poets!), and karaoke nights for those who want to sing to the rafters.

Open mics

  • Alpha Wave Studios. Part event space and part recording studio, this venue is a great place for open mics—and they happen monthly. The next one is May 20 at 7 p.m.

  • Bernie’s Hillside Lounge. A favorite local music venue, you can stop by every Wednesday at 7 p.m. for the weekly open mic.

  • Evolution Dopen Mic. Taking place monthly at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center for Education (the next one is May 16), this is one of Newark’s longest-running open mics.

  • Madison Community Arts Center. You’ll find two options here: a monthly music open mic (the next one is May 13) and a monthly comedy open mic (the next one is May 20). Both begin at 7 p.m.

  • Montclair Brewery. Start off every month with a Wednesday open mic at this brewery. Doors are at 7 p.m.

Karaoke nights 

  • Grasshopper off the Green. Tuesday is karaoke night at this Morristown favorite. The singing starts at 9:30 p.m.
