Taste That Tomato

The flourishing restaurant row on Newark’s Market Street has just welcomed a newcomer: Mercato Tomato Pie, an independently owned restaurant and pizzeria, serves up coal-fired pizzas prepared in the tradition of the coal-oven pies of early 20th century New Jersey. Its specialty thin-crust pizza is cooked in a handcrafted, six-ton coal oven, which is kept hot 24 hours a day and can reach temperatures of up to 1,000 degrees.
“The increase in residents, office workers and visitors to the Prudential Center and other local attractions has heightened the demand for quality food in the area,” says co-owner Bill Fonte, noting that Mercato is “Market” in Italian. “We believe our take on pizza-making elevates it to an artisanal level.” The restaurant features a full-service bar and dining room along with takeout, delivery and off-site catering.
