At 7 years old, Derek Bagin quickly learned an important lesson of the pool and spa business. “I was helping my dad with a bucket of chlorine,” says Derek, vice president of construction for B&B Pool and Spa, an award-winning, family-run business. “I got a strong whiff of the chemical which made me ill.” It was uphill from there, however, as Derek learned the retail side, then serviced pools while in high school, and now, working alongside longtime employees, designs and constructs custom pools for residential and commercial clients. Derek has seen first-hand the industry’s changes. “Complex construction and hydraulic demands keep us busy,” he says, citing a project involving a perimeter slot overflow detail. Whether it’s a 6,000 square-foot pool for a commercial client, a high-tech fully automated custom pool with luxury water features and amenities, or a tight design for a smaller backyard, Derek is up to lead the challenge.
