Founded in 1960 by Tony Chernalis, The Market Basket’s original Wyckoff grocery store and deli was the answer to a busy local corporate community of employees who requested prepared dinner dishes to bring home. In 1988, with the help of Tony’s son, Mark, the family added a larger store in Franklin Lakes, which is now known as Bergen’s gourmet paradise. Today, three generations of the Chernalis’ family run two locations of the Market Basket, winners of dozens of awards thanks to top-notch culinary-trained chefs, hand-selected produce, freshest fish picked daily, top-quality meat from genuine butchers and the very best in customer service. The Market Basket is also well-known for its award-winning catering division raved about for services including party planning, custom invitations, floral design and entertainment. Today, with the help of a third generation family member, Zach Chernalis, the family-owned, high-end specialty food emporium is one of Bergen most beloved destinations.
