The Oxygen Advantage
How MD Hyperbaric Parsippany is changing the way North Jersey heals

We all know that oxygen is essential to sustaining life, but did you know that oxygen also plays a critical role in the body’s healing processes after injuries, illnesses, and surgeries?
The Role of Oxygen in Healing
Our cells and tissues need oxygen to function, but when tissues are injured or inflamed, or when circulation is compromised, the oxygen in the air may not reach the areas that need it—or there simply may not be enough to do the job.
“That’s when Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) can mean the difference between healing and infection,” says Jay E. Bowen, DO, a board-certified physical medicine and pain management specialist at the New Jersey Regenerative Institute and Partner and Medical Director of MD Hyperbaric Parsippany, located within. “In fact, HBOT can save tissues, limbs, and even lives.”
What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)?
The air we breathe contains 21 percent oxygen. In normal circumstances, this is usually enough to keep us healthy. But when it comes to healing certain wounds, injuries, and other conditions, pure oxygen is necessary. “HBOT, like the customized treatments we offer at MD Hyperbaric, involves breathing 100 percent oxygen through a mask in a controlled environment called a hyperbaric chamber,” says Dr. Bowen. “The pressure in the chamber allows the body to absorb up to 1,200 percent more oxygen than it would while breathing normal air.”
The increased pressure (generally two to three times greater than outside air) and oxygen concentration delivered in HBOT helps the immune system fight infection, generate stem cells, and repair and regenerate tissues.
The Evolution of HBOT
HBOT is not a new concept. In fact, the first hyperbaric chamber was created by a British physician in the 17th century, though it would be centuries before HBOT was perfected for therapeutic and clinical use. In 1937, it was first used successfully for the treatment of decompression sickness (“the bends”), and it has come a long way since then. At MD Hyperbaric, patients can experience the culmination of decades of scientific research; the latest technological advances; state-of-the-art equipment; and professional, compassionate care.

Now open in Parsippany, MD Hyperbaric brings world-class hyperbaric oxygen therapy to North Jersey, offering patients access to advanced healing treatments close to home.
What Conditions Can MD Hyperbaric Treat?
Twenty-first-century HBOT has a wide range of applications, including treatment of conditions that often involve low oxygen levels, tissue damage, or severe infections. Among the conditions MD Hyperbaric treats are:
- Air and gas bubbles in the blood vessels
- Severe anemia
- Acute thermal burns
- Carbon monoxide poisoning
- Crush injury, compartment syndrome, and acute traumatic ischemias
- Decompression sickness
- Gas gangrene
- Sudden and complete hearing loss
- Severe infections of the skin and bone
- Radiation injury
- Compromised skin grafts and flaps
- Vision loss (when sudden and painless in one eye due to blockage of blood flow)
- Nonhealing wounds such as diabetic foot ulcers
“While most people may be aware of HBOT for wound healing or recovery after surgery, many don’t realize its potential for conditions like long Covid,” says Chris Neal, CEO of MD Hyperbaric. “HBOT can help improve oxygen delivery at the cellular level, reduce inflammation, and support the body’s natural repair mechanisms. For individuals struggling with lingering symptoms like brain fog, fatigue, or shortness of breath, we have seen that HBOT can be a powerful tool in helping restore function and quality of life.”
In addition, according to Dr. Bowen, HBOT can:
- be integrated into orthopedic care to augment traditional treatments.
- help offer a new or additional path to healing for patients recovering from neurological conditions, such as stroke, brain injury, or neurodegenerative diseases.
- provide targeted relief and complement traditional treatments for certain autoimmune conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and Crohn’s disease.
- offer a supportive path to neurological recovery for patients with concussions and traumatic brain injuries (TBIs).
What to Expect at MD Hyperbaric Parsippany
The MD Hyperbaric team will conduct an intake to assess each prospective patient’s medical history and specific circumstances, and the patient will be evaluated by the medical director to determine their eligibility for HBOT. Each patient’s treatment plan is overseen by the medical director and, if a patient is referred by another physician, the MD Hyperbaric team will collaborate with the referring physician to design a tailored treatment protocol.
Patients can expect spacious, private, FDA-cleared, medical-grade, hard-shell hyperbaric chambers designed for maximum comfort. The chamber used by MD Hyperbaric is the FDA-approved Fortius 420, the largest chamber on the market.
A session generally lasts for about 80 minutes, and, during that time, patients can relax, read, or sleep while breathing normally to deliver 100 percent oxygen to the body.
MD Hyperbaric Comes to Parsippany!
“We are proud to open our MD Hyperbaric Parsippany location, offering a modern, comfortable environment that focuses on patient safety and clinical excellence,” says Neal. “MD Hyperbaric aims to make every visit both restorative and welcoming.”
The new Parsippany, New Jersey location, easily accessible from major highways including I-287, I-80, and I-280, will make treatments accessible to patients who, in the past, would have had to travel outside the immediate area for HBOT. “I’m excited to provide greater opportunity for patients to receive HBOT outside of the hospital to maximize their health and wellness and quality of life,” says Dr. Bowen. “We’re looking forward to serving the greater Parsippany community.”
