A Fresh Start this Summer

Head to Bergen’s farmers markets to find the cream of the crop in produce, baked goods, gluten-free treats—and the pickle guy!




 

Whether the DIY garden you started during quarantine is gifting you fresh veggies or just feeding the woodland creatures in your yard, we’re all grateful that farmers markets have returned to Bergen County. That idea seemed improbable about two months ago, but now that the curve has flattened a bit, Garden State farmers got the go-ahead for outdoor summer markets.

Shoppers will find much of the same fresh produce, baked goods and other locally grown and made products as in previous years—what’s different will be the new safety measures in place to guard against coronavirus. Vendors and volunteers are required to wear face coverings and gloves, while customers will be asked to wear masks, practice social distancing and refrain from handling products if possible. If you want to squeeze the tomatoes, ask a vendor first! Though some markets have opened already, several are slated to start this weekend. Here are six to check out this summer:

  • Englewood, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Fridays through Oct. 30. Depot Square Park, corner of North Van Brunt Street and Demarest Avenue; featuring produce, baked goods, vegan and Mexican food, prepared foods, gluten-free treats, handmade soaps and more.
     
  • Fort Lee, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sundays through Nov. 22, Fort Lee Community Center, Inwood Terrace; featuring fresh produce and plants, homemade baked goods, gourmet nuts and dried fruit and more.
     
  • Hasbrouck Heights, 12 to 6 p.m., Tuesdays through October, Boulevard and Central Avenue; featuring plants, flowers, produce baked goods, jams, juices and more.
     
  • Ramsey, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sundays through Nov. 29, train station parking lot, West Main Street; featuring organic produce, gluten-free cakes, fresh eggs, meats, pickles and more.
     
  • Ridgewood, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sundays through Oct. 23, westside train station parking lot at Godwin and West Ridgewood avenues; featuring fresh fruit and veggies, pickles, cheeses, jams, breads and pies.
     
  • Rutherford, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesdays, and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturdays through October, Park Avenue and Glen Road; featuring fresh produce and plants, honey and jams, arts and crafts and more.
     
  • Teaneck, 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. for seniors and 12 to 5 p.m. for general, Thursdays through Oct. 29, municipal parking lot at Beverly Road and Garrison Avenue; featuring fresh produce, artisanal cheeses, homemade ice cream, pies and baked goods.
     
  • Westwood, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturdays through fall, Knights of Columbus parking lot on Crest Street; featuring fresh produce, homemade jerkies, empanadas, gluten-free baked goods and all-natural pet treats.
