11 Bergen Sledding Spots To Try

Get ready, get set and go flying down these free slopes around the county.

Though rain might’ve washed away last weekend’s snow, we’re certain Mother Nature will drop a few more inches of the white stuff this season. And, as much as we all grumble about shoveling, we also aren’t immune to the magic of a snow day.

If you’re itching to enjoy winter’s beauty and your kids are itching to hit the slopes, we have good news for you: When it snows, Bergen has some of the best sledding and tubing destinations in the state. Even better, all of these locations are free for you to stop by and check out at your leisure.

Be sure to check out these spots before the season ends:

  • Atkins Glen Park, Park Ridge. Check out this short hill tucked in a local nature park, and enjoy the sights of the snow-banked river and forest while you’re there. Located at Bear Brook Road.
  • Citizen’s Park, Ridgewood. This is the town’s most popular sledding spot, so snow gets packed down quickly. However, this is a feature, not a bug – combine that with the hill, and you go flying. Located at Monroe and Godwin avenues.
  • Froggy Park, Tenafly. The hills here aren’t as steep as other parts of the county, making it an ideal place to take little ones. Located at 1 Foster Rd.
  • Knickerbocker Country Club, Tenafly. If you don’t have a need for speed and are looking for wide open spaces instead, head over to the open field right beside this country club. Located at 188 Knickerbocker Rd.
  • Midland Park High School: This campus is packed full of hills. Whether you’re looking for something long and steep or something gentler, this school has you covered. Located at 250 Prospect St.
  • Ridgefield Park High School. These slopes are a snow day staple, and tempt students back to campus even when school is out. Located at 1 Ozzie Nelson Dr.
  • Ramsey High School: The hill at the front of this high school is short but steep, making it ideal to go down again and again. Located at 256 E. Main St.
  • Samuel Nelkin County Park, Wallington. Built into a rolling hillside, this park’s wide-open fields make sledding a dream and reduce the risk of any collisions. Located on Rose Street.
  • Sicomac Elementary School, Wykcoff: With a gentle but wide hill, this school is able to accommodate many people at once. The more gradual decline also makes it a great spot to get some practice in with a snowboard. Located at 356 Sicomac Ave.
  • Thomas Jefferson Middle School, Fair Lawn. The two hills are dropped in the center of this middle school field and are so well-known around the county they’ve earned the nickname “T.J. Hill.” Located at 35-01 Morlot Ave.
  • Van Saun Park, Paramus. You might be popping by to see their lights festival or visit some animals at the zoo, but just beyond that is an ever-popular hill where sleigh riders flock every year. Located at 216 E. Forest Ave.
