5 Top Spots to Get Biscuits and Gravy
We have bagels and Taylor ham covered, but these five restaurants can make the Southern breakfast classic with the best of them.

Breakfast is still the most important meal of the day, so why not enjoy food that soothes the soul first thing in the morning? For that, we like to seek a little Southern comfort and dishes inspired by the cooks who brought us classics like fried okra and shrimp and grits. And there’s no better day than today, National Buttermilk Biscuit Day, to dive into a delicious plate of biscuits and gravy, that great Southern favorite featuring flaky and fresh biscuits smothered in a heavenly sausage gravy. Oh, the delight!
And don’t worry if you’d rather watch a cat make biscuits than make a batch yourself: Bergen County has several eateries, including the five listed below, that can set you up with biscuits and gravy. Southern hospitality, though, might be a different story—hey, we’re Jersey!
Benny’s Luncheonette, Fair Lawn. They’re proclaimed the most popular place in town for good reason: Their breakfast specials are off the charts! Head there this weekend for biscuits and Southern gravy, which you can upgrade with eggs, meat and potatoes.
*11-04 Saddle River Rd., 201.791.0730
Chit Chat Diner, Hackensack. Sure, you can get a smoothie or an egg-white omelet, but where’s the fun in that? Treat yourself to the Deep South special: It comes with two biscuits, brown gravy—and a side of buttermilk battered chicken fried steak and two eggs. Now eating that is a good time!
*515 Essex St., 201.820.4033
First Watch, Montvale. The homemade biscuits are topped with savory turkey sausage gravy (a tad healthier than the pork variety) and are accompanied by eggs and potatoes.
*38 Farm View, 551.210.1955
Grand Lux Café, Paramus. Swing by for weekend brunch, where the buttermilk biscuits and gravy comes with eggs and potatoes. Sounds like a lot of fuel for the day—unless you go straight into a food coma and opt for a nap.
*1 Garden State Plaza, 201.909.0399
Huddle House, Garfield. This chain serves its biscuits open-faced with a signature country gravy.
*17 Outwater Ln., 973.955.0895
