5 Family-Friendly Events for MDW
A three-day weekend means more time for family fun! Here are some activities not to miss in Bergen County on Memorial Day Weekend 2021.
The weather is looking iffy for Memorial Day Weekend 2021, but a pandemic forced us to put the celebrations on hold last year—nope, not this time! Rain or shine, take advantage of the three-day weekend—and get your family out of the house.
Here are a handful of MDW events happening in Bergen County (and one in Hudson County) that have something for everyone to enjoy:
Attend a Memorial Day event. Parades and ceremonies are back for 2021 (with social distancing guidelines in place, of course), so show up and support those who served our country. Old Tappan, Ho-Ho-Kus and Saddle Brook are marching forward with their parades, while other boroughs such as Oakland are keeping things more low-key with a memorial ceremony at Veterans Park.
Peruse a farmers’ market. ’Tis the season for fresh fruit and veggies, and farmers’ markets have the cream of the crop. Some Bergen County farmers’ markets don’t open until June, but those in Rutherford, Westwood and Tenafly, for starters, are already open and ready for your business.
Go on a fishing outing. Take advantage of the extra day off by venturing off on a day trip to one of New Jersey’s lakes, ponds and reservoirs for fishing. Or, if you’re a Mahwah resident, join Mahwah’s 31st Annual Fishing Derby on Saturday, May 29 from 10 a.m.–12 p.m. at Silver Creek Pond. Prizes will be awarded to kids ages 5-12 based on size and number of fish caught.
See the animals at Bergen County Zoo. The beginning of May marked the start of peak season for Bergen County Zoo and the reopening of other attractions at Van Saun Park in Paramus, including the carousel and the train ride. The zoo offers morning and afternoon sessions each day of the holiday weekend, and P.S.: Bergen County residents get discounted tickets with proof of ID.
Check out a new exhibit. The Liberty Science Center (in nearby Hudson County) debuts a fun new exhibit on Saturday, May 29 for the vehicle enthusiast in your family—Hot Wheels: Race to Win. The interactive adventure features challenging races and a peek inside the scientific process of building these super-fast cars.
Looking for a Memorial Day Weekend event for which you have an excuse to leave the kids at home? Paint a “patriot proud” canvas at Pinot’s Palette in Edgewater, grab some friends and join a bowling league for a competition at Lodi Lanes or enjoy an hour of Zen at a community-wide outdoor yoga class in Hackensack. See? A little something for everyone!
