5 Local Farms Where You Can Pick Your Own Apples
Ready for the perfect seasonal day trip? Embrace fall and this annual tradition at these area orchards.
The seasons are changing, autumn is on its way and we can’t wait to celebrate.
We all have our favorite fall traditions and, for many, that includes a day trip to a local farm for apple picking. Fresh air, fresh fruit, fresh farm produce and a chance for some great pictures—what’s not to like? Plus, you take home plenty of apples to cook with and snack on.
Whether you’re looking to change up an old tradition and try someplace different or start a new fall custom for years to come, there are several nearby options to pick your own apples. Below are some of our favorites.
Hillsdale’s Demarest Farms is now open daily from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. If you head over soon, you also can catch the end of the pick-your-own peaches season in addition to grabbing some pumpkins. Online reservations for pick-your-own are required, so plan ahead!
If you’re ready to venture out of Bergen, a leisurely 40-minute drive to Morris County’s Chester will bring you to Alstede Farms, which offers more than 50 apple varieties. For more family fun, check out their impressive seasonal corn maze.
Also in Chester and an equally quick drive away is Riamede Farm, New Jersey’s oldest pick-your-own apple orchard. This farm offers full-day tickets every weekend in September.
If you’re willing to leave the state, an easy half-hour trip to Pomona, N.Y., will bring you to the Orchards of Concklin, a family-run farm with a quaint farmers’ market and apple picking every weekend. Macintosh and Honeycrisp apples are in season now.
Drive a little further north to the Warwick Valley Winery & Distillery in Warwick, N.Y., for an afternoon of apple picking—and even more fun when you leave the orchards. The distillery features a restaurant, market, live music, activities and other events throughout fall.
