5 Tips For A Great Labor Day Staycation
You don’t need to leave Bergen County for a memorable holiday weekend.

Maybe the summer went faster than you expected; maybe you enjoyed your big vacation earlier in the season; or maybe you’d rather not deal with traffic. There are plenty of reasons why you might stay close to home for Labor Day Weekend—and Bergen County’s a great place to spend your time.
No matter how much you’ve already crossed off your summer bucket list, you’ll find much more to do in our county. Below are five recommendations on how to make your Labor Day staycation a memorable one:
Family entertainment. As always, Bergen’s events impress. In Lodi, you can check out the St. Joseph’s Feast festival all weekend, with games, rides, community and great food. Enjoy free live music under the stars in Waldwick on Friday, or catch a screening of Martin Scorsese’s legendary concert documentary The Last Waltz at Rutherford’s Williams Center for the Arts on Sept. 2. You can also enjoy a trip to the Bergen County Zoo in Van Saun County Park any day of the week, or stop by the Tenafly Nature Center on Saturday, Sept. 1 for an apple cider making program.
The price is right. Who doesn’t love a Labor Day sale? Stock up on back-to-school tech at Best Buy in Paramus and grab discounted outdoor furniture at The Home Depot in Mahwah or Paramus. Nab your teen the best new looks at Forever 21 in Paramus or Old Navy in Ramsey. Those looking for deals on outdoor gear will find it at REI in Paramus. And that’s just the beginning—more sales will roll out as we get closer to the weekend.
Backyard campground. No, you didn’t misread! Camping can be a stay-at-home activity too. Drag your old tent out of the garage and set it up in your backyard, then pair it with burgers and hotdogs for dinner and s’mores roasted over the firepit or the grill for dessert. This is a great activity for kids, but don’t limit it to just that—a romantic night under the stars is the perfect date for any age.
A toast with friends. If you want to end the season with an all-out girls’-night wine and whine, or an intimate dinner party with friends, impress them with the perfect pairings. When BERGEN asked for his recommendations, sommelier Chris Cree suggested that you pair A. J. Adam Hofberg Riesling Kabinett, 2021 with a summer fruit salad, and Marenco Brachetto d’Acqui Pineto, 2021 with chocolate desserts. Put together a grazing platter of your favorites to snack on alongside and you’re ready for an evening to remember.
Easy adventures. The cooler days are coming, so enjoy the outdoor pleasures Bergen offers while the weather is still glorious. Take a fishing trip to one of Bergen’s many stocked lakes and streams, head to Overpeck County Park in Ridgefield Park or Ramapo Valley County Reservation in Mahwah and enjoy a hike, or grab your bike and ride around the paths at Saddle River County Park in Saddle Brook.
