Ice cream may be the most iconic summer dessert, and Bergen has plenty of options for new and innovative flavors, but it’s not the only treat you can reach for. If you’re looking for something that’s cold and sweet and also light, dairy-free and low in calories, Italian ice can satisfy your cravings.

Here’s more good news: Bergen is loaded with choices. And it’s no wonder—Northern New Jersey is credited, along with New York City and Philadelphia, as one of the places where American-style Italian ice truly began to flourish. The dessert was invented and became popular in places with a large number of immigrants from Southern Italy (it closely resembles Sicilian Granita).
