A 12-foot-tall skeleton was the viral sensation three years ago, and an 8-foot, cloak-wearing pumpkin head named Lewis is 2023’s coveted Halloween décor item. But whether you use larger-than-life decorations or a few simple, hand-carved jack-o’-lanterns, showing off the holiday spirit has become a tradition for many homeowners.

That’s especially true in Bergen County, where we love the “go-big-or-go-home” mentality. Sure, the aforementioned jack-o’-lanterns are festive, and scarecrows on a stick are cute, but that’s child’s play when compared with the neighborhoods in the list below. If you’re into over-the-top décor that’s equal parts scary, entertaining and creative, take a drive to these places and enjoy the show:

Berkley Place, Dumont. The group of homeowners who go all out every Halloween is increasing, bringing this street to life with traditional ghosts and goblins and modern scaries like Jack Skellington and Oogie Boogie.

Century Road, Paramus. There’s no shortage of décor on this busy street, but the home at 88 Century definitely takes it up a notch. Life-sized animatronics, inflatables and good old-fashioned spiders and bats fill the front yard of this house.

Chickasaw Drive, Oakland. A couple of homes on this quiet street light up the night with plenty of spooky lights, skeletons, witches and tombstones.

Clinton Place, Hackensack. Once upon a time, every home on this block went all out for Halloween. Though participation has decreased over the years, the remaining displays—with interactive ghosts, ghouls and other characters—still stop traffic.

Colonial Boulevard, Washington Township. This residential stretch is popular for trick-or-treaters thanks to the end-to-end displays of animated characters, inflatables and other spooky scenes.

Main Avenue, Wood-Ridge. After passing creative, fun and scary decorations along 14th Street, turn onto Main. Here, you’ll find one home with a front lawn covered with monsters, ghosts, skeletons and other characters that’ll surely scare!

Ridge Avenue, Park Ridge. You’ll find everything from smiling jack-o’-lanterns to skeletons to zombies rising from a graveyard from one end of this street to the other.

Sheridan Terrace, Ridgewood. While the decorations in front of 124 Sheridan are worth a peek, the attraction here is the backyard maze. Enjoy a good fright as you try to make your way through the numerous passages. If you’re looking for more mazes, click here!
