Thanksgiving, Christmas and Hanukkah are imminent, but India’s biggest holiday of the year, Diwali, just passed on Sunday, Nov. 12. The festival of lights is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists around the world, and is a big festivity with sweet treats, traditional gifts and fireworks displays (hence the “lights” part). And Shuchi Khosla from Franklin Lakes and her family—including her husband, Kunal, their daughter Sara and their son Vir—went all out for their Diwali celebration. They took this photo to remember the special day. “The most memorable moment of Diwali was lighting a diya (Hindi word for lamp) with kids and teaching them that this is symbolic of spreading light when there is darkness all around,” she tells BERGEN. “It also reinforces the belief that the good always wins over evil.” For more of what’s going on around Bergen County, follow us on Instagram @bergenmagnj.
