Borislav “Bobby” Stoev, D.O.
Bobby Stoev has an international background, a zeal for emergency medicine, a passion for soccer and a magazine collection.
As a child growing up in Bulgaria, Borislav “Bobby” Stoev, D.O., assistant director of the Emergency Department at Saint Peter’s University Hospital, was passionate about soccer and science. He studied the subject in high school and played the game after class, before moving to Kirksville, Mo., at age 19 to attend Truman State University. After graduating magna cum laude with a biology degree, Dr. Stoev completed his residency at York hospital in York, Pa. The 35-year-old now lives in Monroe township with his wife, Lisa Hopkins, M.D., a breast surgeon at the Saint Peter’s Breast Center, and sons Zachary, 4, and Lucas, 2. He has been at Saint Peter’s since the summer of 2010.
What do you like about emergency medicine?
It’s a dynamic field that allows me to make a difference in the lives of numerous patients. I also appreciate the scheduling. Shifts often include evening, weekend and holiday work, but unlike colleagues in other medical fields, when I’m off I don’t carry a pager. Our department at Saint Peter’s is especially exciting, due to the recent renovation that nearly doubled our space to 29,000 square feet. Most ERs date back to the 1970s, but our revamped facility now boasts brand-new equipment and 56 private beds.
On days off, do you still play soccer?
Absolutely! I lack the time and stamina to play in a regular league, but I play pickup games nearly every sunday. My wife is from Maryland, so she’s an ardent Orioles and Ravens fan, and as a family we attend almost all New York Red Bulls soccer games together.
Any other hobbies?
I collect National Geographic magazines. My parents still live in Bulgaria, where my dad was a biology and chemistry teacher. He always encouraged my interest in science, nature and the human condition—all topics covered in that publication. I have about 400 copies. Now I’m searching for the ideal way to display them. —F.M.
