Kenneth Sable is a man of three careers, each of which informs the others. Rock-star status? That’s still in the future.
Saint Peter’s Healthcare System’s chief operating officer likes to say that in a career sense he’s led three lives. Kenneth Sable, M.D., M.B.A., FACEP, 41, received a bachelor’s degree in computer science and engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and spent his summers then working as a programmer at AT&T. He interviewed for a position at Microsoft, but also applied to New Brunswick’s Robert Wood Johnson Medical School—and was accepted. He earned an M.D. there, and completed an emergency medicine residency at Cooper University Hospital in Camden and worked for 10 years at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn. Recently he earned a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Massachusetts. In his third incarnation he’s been an executive at Saint Peter’s since 2012. Dr. Sable lives in Monroe township with his wife, Christina, son Dylan, 5, and daughter Gabriella, 3.
What brought you to Saint Peter’s?
Hospital officials recognized the value of appointing a physician to a leadership position. I haven’t practiced medicine since I arrived, but I still maintain board certifications that allow me to step in any time, and my previous bedside experience has proved invaluable in implementing programs that optimize best practices in patient care. I’m also focused on developing physician relationships within our community. As I work with doctors, it helps that i’m one myself.
Do you see a fourth career on the horizon?
Well, I’ve always wanted to be a rock star. I started playing piano in third grade, but after one year of lessons I told my mom it wasn’t loud enough, so I switched to drums and never looked back. In college my band’s name was Cry Havoc, which is a line from Julius Caesar. Our lead singer was an english major and apparently loved Shakespeare. We used to play original as well as cover tunes at clubs in Philly. Now, whenever I’m home alone, I put on headphones and go to town. —Francesca Moisin
