10 Bergen Hot Dog Stands To Try Now

The only thing better than eating a footlong at a ballpark or a backyard barbecue is enjoying a frank at one of these local eateries.
1 Hot Dog Stands

Last weekend’s hot dog-eating contest in Coney Island might’ve lacked the star power of previous years (we miss you, Joey Chestnut and Kobayashi!), but that’s not the case at many Bergen County eateries. At these restaurants, shops and roadside stands, the hot dogs are always the showstoppers we seek and crave. Whether you prefer a classic frank with mustard and kraut or a footlong loaded with everything but the kitchen sink (though in one spot, you can order a “Kitchen Sink”), these bites are sure to please.

Here is a list of 10 of our favorite hot dog stops, all of which go the extra mile (footlong?) to give you what you want. Grab a bite or two on National Hot Dog Day, July 17, or enjoy a few any day of the year!

1950 Originals, Westwood. This hot dog and burger joint has gained a large following since opening last fall. Credit both the regular hot dogs (a whopping 9 inches) and the special franks, such as the candy bacon peanut butter dog and hot honey pimento cheese dog.
*325 Broadway, Westwood, 201.275.0622

Boulevard Dogs-n-More, Hasbrouck Heights. A neighborhood favorite, this eatery offers a variety of dogs, toppings and specials, as well as chicken fingers, cheesesteaks and smash burgers. Our go-to order: bacon mac and cheese hot dog with a side of pulled pork fries. YOLO!
*206 Boulevard, Hasbrouck Heights, 201.272.1853

Dog House Saloon, Washington Township. Locals love the burgers and sandwiches, but the hot dogs are a must-try for all visitors. The double bacon dog is a belly-filler, for sure.
*270 Pascack Rd., Washington Township, 201.722.1820

Hank’s Franks, Lodi. A small eatery with a big following, this roadside stand offers classic dogs with a variety of toppings. Make the experience extra special by washing down a couple of franks with a chocolate egg cream.
*210 Rte. 46, Lodi, 973.473.8589

Hiram’s, Fort Lee. This simple roadside stand is as popular as any hot dog shop in the world, thanks in large part to one of its all-time biggest fans, the late Anthony Bourdain. Get yours with cheese, with chili or with cheese and chili!
*1345 Palisade Ave., Fort Lee, 201.592.9602

Hot Dog Caboose, Midland Park. The unique setting inside an actual train caboose is an attraction, but the specialty dogs are an even bigger draw. The pulled pork-topped North Carolina dog and double-stuffed pretzel dog are our favorites.
*211 Greenwood Ave., Midland Park, 201.444.2531

Hot Dog House, Carlstadt. It’s tough to miss the bright yellow shop in the Meadowlands area, and it’s tough to pass on the deep-fried dogs here. Certainly, you’ll be happy you stopped in for the “Darryl Dawkins” dog (raw onions, mustard, hot chili and cheese) or the stacked “Kitchen Sink.”
*510 Rte. 17 S., Carlstadt, 201.935.5803

Johnny & Hanges, Fair Lawn. Get a deep-fried dog made with beef and pork or go “All the Way” with a full quarter-pounder topped with mustard, onion and chili sauce. Your mouth watering yet?
*20-23 Maple Ave., Fair Lawn, 201.791.9060

Jolly Nicks, Dumont. The burgers and hot sandwiches are delicious, but be sure to try a jumbo frank when you visit this shop. Try it with mustard, peppers and onions—or all their condiments!
*31 E. Madison Ave., Dumont, 201.501.0889

Karl Ehmer Quality Meats, Hillsdale. You can’t enter the specialty meat store without passing the little hot dog cart out front, run every day for the past 20+ years. Sausages and brats are available, but the basic hot dog has the snap that everyone craves.
*120 Broadway, Hillsdale, 201.664.1477
