6 Ways Families Can Welcome Fall

Apple picking and hayrides are great, but these outdoor activities capture the season’s best vibes too.
4 Welcome Fall

Summer technically doesn’t end for another week or so, and there are plenty of end-of-season fairs in Bergen County to enjoy. If you’re like us, however, nothing is as exciting as fall traditions and activities.

Looking for ways you and your crew can usher in the new season? Apple picking and pumpkin carving are musts, but there are plenty of other happenings to do right here in our neighborhoods that will get you into the autumn spirit. So, grab a pumpkin spice latte and a few apple cider donuts and head to one of these events:

  • The Ridgefield Police Benevolent Association Food Truck and Music Festival has more than just delicious bites and great tunes. Head to the event from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14 at Veterans Memorial Park in Ridgefield for dozens of vendors, a petting zoo, inflatables, games, prizes and, of course, food trucks and live music. Admission is $5 for attendees ages 6 and over, and proceeds will benefit the Ridgefield PBA Scholarship Funds and Civic Association.
  • Who doesn’t love picnics and fall flowers? Stokes Farm in Old Tappan combines them at family-friendly Sunset Sip & Snip from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19. The farm will provide scissors, flowers, jars for picking and tables; visitors can bring their own food, wine (and glasses) and picnic blankets. The cost is $45.
  • Families with little ones can visit Abma’s Farm in Wyckoff for Tall Tales and Tractor Time. Starting at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, kids and their caretakers can listen to a captivating story, enjoy a tasty snack and get an up close and personal look at one of the farm’s tractors. The program is approximately one hour, and tickets are $30 (includes one child and one adult admission).
  • If your long game isn’t on par this season, why not stick to putting? The Bright Side Family Mini Golf Tournament takes place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21 at Paramus Mini Golf, and it’s the perfect event for family fun and fundraising. Adult tickets are $50, and children can play for $25. Fees include golf, lunch and an event cap. Proceeds benefit Teaneck-based Bright Side Family, which provides care and support for seniors and their families.
  • Join the Bergen Audubon Society for its Fall Equinox Walk at 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 22 at the New Jersey Botanical Garden in nearby Ringwood. Tour the grounds and see a variety of bird species in their natural habitat. The event is free, and the group will meet at the carriage house.
  • Take the entire family on a guided Fall Equinox Campfire and Night Hike at Tenafly Nature Center from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22. The program will be held outdoors, so visitors should dress appropriately. Online registration is required. The cost is $8 for TNC members and $12 for non-members.
