Keeping The Rhythm
An accomplished Maywood drummer gets some practice in.
Famously, the way you get to Carnegie Hall is through “practice, practice, practice.” That doesn’t mean that, once you get there, you should stop. Alvester C. Garnett of Maywood is a professional freelance drummer who often works on Broadway (he’s currently working on Gypsy, starring Audra McDonald), is a member of the jazz music department at Montclair State University and has played professionally on every inhabited continent except Australia. Recently, he posted this video to his Instagram showing off some swing and dance rhythms on his drum kit. “So far in my career I’ve performed with Harry Belafonte, Fantasia, Abbey Lincoln, Wynton Marsalis and the Duke Ellington Society Orchestra,” he says.
