5 Easy Exercises Without A Gym

You don’t need weights and machines to get buff. Break a sweat and have fun doing these activities.
4 Easy Exercises

Many of us have been snacking on jelly beans and chocolate bunnies all week long, and for those who celebrate Easter, there’s likely a big feast planned for Sunday. With all the food we’re consuming this season, National Exercise Day on April 18 is the perfect time to burn a few calories and remind ourselves not to overindulge.

Of course, you don’t need a gym membership to work out. Bergen County offers dozens of other ways to break a sweat and get your heart rate going. Below are a few ideas:

Rock on. Whether you’re totally buff or haven’t left the couch in months, everyone is fit for indoor rock climbing. The Gravity Vault in Upper Saddle River, High Exposure Rock Climbing in Northvale and The Goat Climbing Gym in Hackensack have facilities and hours to get you moving.

Take a hike. Bergen County is home to many easy walking trails, but a trek through the woods that goes up hills, around boulders and over running water is guaranteed to get your blood flowing. Try the paths at Ramapo Valley County Reservation or Campgaw Mountain, both in Mahwah, or the cliffside trails at Palisades Interstate Park in Alpine and Closter.

Paddle time. It’s no secret that tennis and pickleball are great sports, but table tennis can test your stamina and strength just as well. Depending on your competitive spirit, table tennis can give you a full-body workout without overtaxing your joints while upping your reflexes and hand-eye coordination. Ready to Golf in River Edge features 14 table tennis tables as well as seven robotic tables for solo play.

Dance the night away. Even the most uncoordinated person can enjoy dancing, which provides a good cardio workout, improves coordination and sculpts leg and core muscles. No matter what your preferred style—hip-hop, ballroom, tango—you’ll definitely get a workout at dance classes offered at places like Fred Astaire Dance Studio, which has multiple locations in Bergen, and HeART in Motion in Ridgewood.

Make a splash. OK, your backyard swimming pool isn’t open yet, but there are many indoor swim options for folks to do a few laps. For instance, facilities such as Fountain Fitness Center in Ramsey and Teaneck’s Glen Pointe Fitness offer passes, and members of the Ridgewood YMCA or Meadowlands YMCA can take classes or enjoy open swims daily.
