Is there anything better than women empowering other women? Nearly 300 people did just that on Wednesday, April 30, at the Terrace at Biagio’s in Paramus.

At the BERGEN Women’s Health Experience, doctors, health and wellness experts and those ready to take charge of their health came together for a night of inspiring speakers and education—and, of course, good food and great company.

The panel of speakers, moderated by BERGEN Editor in Chief Rita Guarna, included Madouna Hanna, D.O., of Bergen New Bridge Medical Center in Paramus, who presented “Menopausal Health and the Benefits of Integrative Medicine in Providing Relief from Symptoms.” Dr. Hanna went in-depth about the ways physical therapy, aqua therapy and treatment methods such as Botox injections can ease the aches and pains that come with menopause, including chronic migraines.

Tori Weil, the director of sales at Christian Health in Wyckoff, facilitated “Health & Aging: Conversations from the Heart,” a discussion between two adult children of aging parents. It approached the topic of addressing conversations around assisted and senior living with parents with both empathy and urgency. “If you don’t make these choices now,” said Weil, “they will end up being made for you.”

Christy Morrissey, M.D., of Valley Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Center in Paramus, spoke about “Early Detection: Understanding Breast & Gynecologic Cancers.” In addition to reviewing screening criteria and possible warning signs for breast and uterine cancers, she offered words of advice. “Advocate for yourself,” Dr. Morrissey said. “If you think something is wrong and the doctor won’t listen, push for tests.”

Said one of the attendees of the event: “I find that when women come together, we’re so supportive of each other. We inspire each other. We share our journeys, and we can learn a lot from each other.”

Guests also visited dozens of exhibitor booths and chatted with experts in various fields, from allergy management to dermatology and skincare to massage therapy. The evening ended with nearly two dozen raffle prizes, with all proceeds benefiting The Arnold P. Gold Foundation, Healing the Children New Jersey, Spring Lake Hope Foundation and the Ridgewood YMCA.

“Events like this just open up so many opportunities for support and information-sharing,” said another attendee.
