Dining out isn’t just about what’s on the plate—sometimes, you also need the right vibe to satisfy a craving. Scattered throughout Bergen are eateries that serve more than just meals; they serve memories. Some have chrome-plated stools and jukebox tunes, while others offer food and drink that were popular generations ago.

While we love logging into Wi-Fi and trying the trendiest treats when we go out, we also have a soft spot for the old-fashioned. These Bergen restaurants are just a few of the throwback eateries where you can enjoy nostalgic décor and taste the flavors of the past.

Daily Treat

The Daily Treat, Ridgewood. Surrounded by the hustle and bustle of Ridgewood’s downtown is this 62-year-old restaurant. Here, you can enjoy all of today’s diner favorites—or opt for something from yesteryear like a hand-spun milkshake, ice cream soda (National Root Beer Float Day is Aug. 6) or egg cream.
*177 E. Ridgewood Ave., Ridgewood, 201.652.9113

Crystal Diner

Dumont Crystal Diner, Dumont. Inside what’s considered the oldest diner in Bergen County is a handwritten sign: “No WiFi, Act like it’s the 1970s, Talk to each other.” As you chat, feast on assorted breakfast platters, lunch sandwiches, burgers or salads.
*45 W. Madison Ave., Dumont, 201.387.1212

Emerson Hotel

Emerson Hotel Restaurant & Bar, Emerson. Originally called Etna House, this neighborhood mainstay has stood in Emerson Plaza East since 1872. Its menu caters to today’s palates, but the décor is a time warp to yesterday: Dark, wood paneled walls hold onto dart boards, while a timeless brick fireplace is the backdrop of a stage for live musicians.
*31 Emerson Plz. E., Emerson, 201.262.7557

Ho Ho Kus Inn

Ho-Ho-Kus Inn & Restaurant, Ho-Ho-Kus. Constructed in 1796 and first used as a tavern in 1890, this landmark in the middle of town is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Celebrate a special occasion, a small family dinner or weekend brunch in one of its elegant dining rooms.
*1 E. Franklin Tpke., Ho-Ho-Kus, 201.445.4115

Lido

Lido Restaurant, Hackensack. This restaurant in the heart of Hackensack has been serving thin-crust pizza and crispy wings since 1956. But there’s more nostalgia: Inside, you’ll find a dimly lit dining room, an iconic jukebox and pay phone and a bar where it seems like everyone knows your name.
*701 Main St., Hackensack, 201.487.8721

Wallington Diner

Wallington Diner, Wallington. Dining here is like stepping into a time machine. While you sip a Brooklyn egg cream or fountain soda and savor an omelet or sandwich (try the Velvet Elvis: grilled peanut butter, banana and bacon on white bread), eyeball the bright, 1950s-inspired décor.
*417 Paterson Ave., Wallington, 201.754.7470
