Campfire Is Calling
Fresh air, good company and s’mores—discover the best spots to pitch a tent close to home.

Looking for a getaway that’s low-stress, high-reward and perfect for you and your crew? If you’re not enjoying some of the great events happening in Bergen County this weekend, think about spending a night or two under the stars.
Camping checks all the boxes—fresh air, unplugged moments together and s’mores by the fire, of course. With summer at its midpoint, now’s the perfect time to plan this outdoor adventure. (After all, Global Sleep Under The Stars Night is Aug. 8.) Whether you’re a seasoned camper or just testing the waters with a cozy cabin or glamping setup, there are plenty of great spots in and around Bergen County to explore, including these sites:
Campgaw Mountain County Reservation, Mahwah. Activities abound at this county park, which is known for archery and disc golf opportunities (as well as skiing and snow tubing during winter), but passive recreation also rules here. More than a dozen campsites are available (permit required) from April to November, giving visitors all-day access to the 1,373 wooded park.
Camp Glen Gray, Mahwah. This weekend campground within the Ramapo Mountains features cabins, lean-tos and tent sites, all available by reservation. Soak up the sounds of nature while enjoying hiking, fishing, boating and the company of your group.
Ramapo Valley County Reservation, Mahwah. Like Campgaw, this park has plenty of hiking trails and fishing spots, all accessible from the nine camping sites (permit required). It’s one of the county’s most popular parks, so be sure to check and make your reservations ahead of time.
Beyond Bergen
Beaver Pond Campground, Stony Point, N.Y. This site in nearby Rockland County, N.Y., is on the outskirts of Harriman State Park. It features tent and trailer sites, cabins, comfort stations, showers, laundry facilities plus recreation activities like swimming, picnicking and more.
Camp Wyanokie, West Milford. It’s just you and nature at this rustic spot—there’s no running water, restrooms, electricity nor Wi-Fi. However, there are 150 acres of pristine woods, a 5-acre lake, hiking trails and camp sites with fire pits and charcoal grills to help you relax and unwind.
Rifle Camp Park, Woodland Park. Overnight camping by permit at this Passaic County park includes lean-to platform sheds, grills, fire pits and restrooms. Camp solo or bring your closest pals for a memorable stay.
