5 Shops To Stock Up On Seafood

Whether you’re celebrating Lent or looking for fresh fish, these markets have more than just the catch of the day.

The Christian season of Lent began on Feb. 18, beginning a time of prayer, charity, abstinence and fasting. Many others consume fish and seafood instead of meat on Fridays.

For those who observe the latter, Bergen County is home to dozens of great restaurants specializing in delicious and nutritious seafood, including last year’s Readers’ Choice winners River Palm Terrace in Edgewater, Varka in Ramsey and Biggie’s in Carlstadt. (Be sure to vote for your favorites in the 2026 Readers’ Choice contest.) But if you’d rather make a fantastic fish dinner at home on Fridays during Lent (or any day of the week), there are plenty of local markets stocked with fresh, delicious seafood.

While the selection is great at grocers like Wegmans and Whole Foods, as well as at Asian-specialty markets such as H-Mart and Mitsuwa in Edgewater, here are a few independent markets where fishmongers can help you bring home the catch of the day:

  • Anchor Seafood, Montvale. In addition to a great fresh fish selection, Anchor also offers a variety of recipes to make or inspire your dinner. The best part is that many of those recipes are posted on Anchor’s website!

  • The Fish Dock, Closter. This shop sources its fresh fish and seafood such as haddock, halibut, arctic char and sole both from Iceland and more local waters. It also sells fish already slathered in their homemade marinades.

  • Peter’s Fish Market, Midland Park. This Readers’ Choice Best Fish Market honoree has been offering the freshest of fresh fish for more than 40 years, from filets of salmon, sole, cod and swordfish to shellfish faves like clams and mussels.
