Cast Away: Fishing Is Back In Bergen
New rules and stocked waterways make the pastime easier for everyone this season.

Rod, reel and a little fresh air—trout season is officially back in New Jersey, and it’s the perfect excuse to slow things down and spend some time by the water. Last weekend’s season opening is 20 days earlier than usual, giving you extra time to head out. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or just in it for the peace and quiet, there’s nothing like a day of casting lines to reset and recharge.
Even better, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has rolled out updated fishing regulations designed to make things simpler and more accessible for everyone. So grab your gear, pick your favorite Bergen County spot and ease into a weekend that’s equal parts relaxation and reel-in-the-fun.
Here’s what to expect:
Now through Sunday, May 31, anglers can keep up to six trout per day in most waters, with a minimum size of 9 inches. Starting June 1, that daily limit drops to two trout—a change designed to stretch the season and keep more fish in the water longer, especially those prized 14- to 16-inch trout stocked in the fall.
By the time spring stocking wraps up, more than 570,000 rainbow trout will be released into waterways across New Jersey, with most measuring around 10½ inches and weighing about half a pound—perfect for a fun day on the line.
For those hoping to land a real standout catch, this season also brings 6,000 to 7,000 broodstock trout—larger, mature fish ranging from 14 to 26 inches and tipping the scales at up to 7 pounds. These trophy-worthy trout will be stocked in select waters suited for their size, adding an extra layer of excitement for anglers ready to cast their luck.
In addition, about 20,000 brown trout have already been introduced into select New Jersey waterways thanks to a partnership with the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission. It’s a welcome boost that gives anglers even more variety—and a few new bragging rights—this season.
