Where To Enjoy Derby Day In Bergen
Big hats, fancy dresses and plenty of mint juleps—enjoy Kentucky Derby festivities.

It’s known as “the fastest two minutes in sports,” but in Bergen County, the Kentucky Derby turns into a full day of celebration. From big screens and mint juleps to best-dressed contests and lively crowds, local watch parties are filled with a little bit of Churchill Downs energy right to our backyards.
Whether you’re there for the hats, the horses or just a good excuse to gather with friends, Saturday’s Kentucky Derby viewing events are all about festive fun and springtime flair. Pick your favorite spot, place your (friendly) bets and get ready to cheer like you’re trackside. Here are a few to check out on Saturday, May 2:
It’s an all-day affair at the Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, which opens at 9 a.m. with the first Churchill Downs post at 11 a.m. There are three ways to join the party: A Derby Day Pink Buffet opens at 4 p.m.; café reservations include a four-person table and waitstaff service; and lounge reservations are available with options for bar seating, tables or couches with waitstaff service. Other events, including a Derby Hat Contest, will take place throughout the day.
Join the Bergen Irish Association for its annual Kentucky Derby Party at the Bergen Irish Cultural Center in Dumont. Stop by at 5 p.m. for a buffet dinner, beverages, games, activities and prizes for best dressed and best hat. Check the group’s website and Facebook page for ticket information.
The Shannon Rose’s Kentucky Derby Watch Party begins at 6 p.m. with food, mint juleps, fascinators and prizes for best Derby outfits.
The Alpine Country Club’s Kentucky Derby Viewing Party is open to members and guests. Celebrate the event with spirits and snacks, and be sure to wear your very best Derby attire. The event starts at 6:30 p.m., and reservations are encouraged.
Enjoy a Southern-inspired menu at Union Bar & Provisions in East Rutherford. Dinner features dishes like Kentucky BBQ Bourbon Wings, Derby Sliders and Kentucky Fried Chicken Sandwiches. Remember to wear your best Derby Day hat—the staff’s favorite headpiece will win dinner for four!
If you’d rather skip the over-the-top celebrations and focus solely on the race, simply pull up a seat at one of Bergen County’s sports bars to catch the race. These spots are not only great for game-day action, but the bites and brews are just as good and memorable as the sports they show.
