Safe at home
Though many of us will be heading to municipal fields and parks to watch the big show, it’s been legal in New Jersey to buy certain ground-based fireworks and sparklers since 2017. These can certainly add a pop to your celebration—but, of course, need to be handled with care. Per the American Fireworks Standards Laboratory (AFSL), 13,004 fireworks-related injuries were treated in emergency departments nationwide in 2025.
If you’re planning on using fireworks or sparklers yourself this season, the New Jersey Division of Fire Safety provides the following tips:
- Purchase fireworks only from reputable retailers.
- Avoid items with damaged or tampered packaging.
- Never use fireworks indoors.
- Do not use fireworks in windy or dry conditions.
- Read and follow all manufacturer instructions.
- Do not allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.
- Never use fireworks under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
- Wear protective eyewear.
- Never hold lit fireworks in your hands.
- Use fireworks away from people, homes and flammable materials.
- Never point or throw fireworks at anyone.
- Light only one device at a time; step away immediately after lighting.
- Never ignite fireworks in containers.
- Do not attempt to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks.
- Soak used devices and “duds” in water overnight before disposal.
- Keep a bucket of water or hose nearby for emergencies.
- Double wrap-soaked fireworks in plastic before discarding in household trash.
