Hunting Vegetables
A pup from Franklin Lakes takes on his biggest challenge yet: catching a cucumber.

Cocker spaniels were originally bred as hunting dogs, usually trained to retrieve game. However, Benoit, a 4½-year-old English cocker spaniel from Franklin Lakes, much prefers the garden. Recently, Ariella Omar Gold captured a video of Benoit stealing some of her first summer vegetable harvest. “Usually, Benoit is swimming in the pool while my family and I are tending to our garden,” says Gold. “While it’s still early in the season, the cucumber, zucchini, squash and peppers have already started producing. Benoit goes crazy for cucumbers, so the second he saw me plucking them, he was very interested.” He was able to nab one, but Gold quickly forgave him: “He’s my family’s best friend, and we can’t imagine life without him,” she says.
