Summer’s winding down, and if you’re still looking for a good book for the beach or poolside, you’ve come to the right place. We have three suggestions that are not only interesting and inspiring reads, but each book was written by a Bergen County author.

Be sure to check out these titles and support three local writers!

  • Such Unfortunates by Andrew Mann. A phrase from the “big book” of Alcoholics Anonymous gives this book its title. It describes those who can’t get “clean” even if they want to, and Little Ferry native Mann thought he was one of these—doomed to fail. “It’s an amazing and inspirational true story,” he says.
  • Russian Tattoo by Elena Gorokhova. This memoir “is about the fierce resilience of my Soviet mother and the reappearance of this resilience in my American daughter,” says the immigrant author, a Ridgewood resident. Bridging two cultures and three generations, the book finds a common thread.
  • Viral by Robin Cook. This prolific author grew up in Leonia and credits its progressive schools and fine library as early encouragements. The latest Cook book, a medical thriller, is a recipe for all-too-familiar chills as its protagonist seeks care for his ailing wife in the era of COVID-19 and comes up against the U.S. health care system and bills too big to pay. When this character’s life falls apart, revenge seems the only option.
