Walk off the big meal and start your holiday shopping at these Bergen County stores.

Before you go for another round of turkey or grab a second slice of pie on Thanksgiving, stop and think about the consequences. All those extra servings might prolong the imminent food coma, thus preventing you from getting an early start on Black Friday.

As more retailers buck the trend of opening on Thanksgiving, consumers are back to waiting for Friday morning to take advantage of major deals. And there are many this year, whether you’re shopping for yourself or someone on your Holiday list.

Get your holiday shopping done at one of many local, independent shops, including the shops below that you selected in the 2024 Readers’ Choice poll. And if you’d rather avoid the Black Friday crowds at the major retailers, rest up and then check support them on Small Business Saturday.

• Bookends, Ridgewood. Browse through the store’s collection of best-sellers, classics, games, toys and autographed books.
• Books & Greetings, Northvale. This independent bookstore has a large selection of new titles and old favorites as well as games, toys, stationery and other gift items.

For those headed to one of Bergen’s many malls, you’ll be happy to know that there are specials happening all day. The first 500 shoppers at Bergen Town Center (which opens at 7 a.m.) will receive a new tote bag with a scratch-off ticket for an additional prize. Those visiting American Dream can get 50 percent off select attractions, including DreamWorks Water Park, Nickelodeon Universe, The Rink and more. While you’re at any of the Bergen County malls, remember to take the kids for photos with Santa.

While we all love to support local businesses, shopping at a big-box store or chain has benefits too (more discounts!). Below are eight places, for instance, to check out while you’re not browsing Bergen main streets.

• Carter’s, Edgewater, Garfield, Paramus. Looking for something for the little one? Black Friday deals include items that are up to 50 to 60 percent off.
• Dick’s Sporting Goods, Paramus. A large selection of clothing, shoes, team apparel, golf gear and fitness equipment will be on sale. Opens at 6 a.m.
• Guitar Center, Paramus. Select keyboards, guitars, drum kits, sound equipment and more are on sale from 10 to 50 percent off. Opens at 6 a.m.
• Kohl’s, Paramus, Ramsey. Shoppers can expect a variety of “door buster” deals on clothing, shoes, toys, accessories, home goods and appliances. Opens at 5 a.m.
• Macy’s, Paramus. This department store has reduced prices on items such as clothing, jewelry, fragrances and appliances. Opens at 6 a.m.
• P.C. Richard & Son, Paramus. Shop for discounted TV sets, computers, game consoles, washers, dryers, refrigerators and more.
• PetSmart, Garfield, Lyndhurst, Paramus. Your furry family member has been good all year, so reward them with a new bed, treats and toys, many of which are on special. Hours vary.
• Target, Edgewater, Hackensack, Paramus. Select electronics, appliances, luggage, holiday items and more are on sale. Be on the lookout for daily deals too. Opens at 6 a.m.
