These “power foods” will help strengthen your body from the inside out during an unpredictable time when we need that health boost more than ever.
We’re in a period of history now where Emergen-C is in limited supply in Bergen County drugstores and everyone with a little sore throat or cough thinks it’s the “C” word. So yeah, we’d say that now is as good a time as any to load up on healthy foods and supplements that you can find in stores (or online) that will give your immune system a much-needed boost. Though no single food or vitamin will help you prevent coronavirus if you’re exposed to it (sorry!), here are some that can give your body a boost during this trying time:
This medicinal plant is known to fight off cold and flu symptoms and even shorten their duration and severity. High in vitamin C, antioxidants and fiber and low in calories, elderberry supplements come in various forms, from syrups to capsules. Just don’t consume raw elderberry leaves or berries—they’re poisonous!
A bright yellow spice often used in ethnic cooking, turmeric is an immune booster that is known to have both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Sprinkle some into your poultry dish or fish during flu season (and now) for a jolt of goodness.
Speaking of fish, certain types are known for their omega-3 fatty acid content, which helps regulate immunity in the body and fight against infections. These include salmon, mackerel and tuna.
While most vegetables are healthy, of course, fungi like mushrooms are especially high in polysaccharides, which are molecules that boost immunity. Button and shiitake mushrooms in particular contain a lot of both vitamins B and C.
Berries are known to be high in antioxidants and vitamin C, which are both essential for healthy immune systems. Blueberries specifically are high in flavonoids, which help reduce damaged cells and boost immunity. Assemble a bowl of raspberries, strawberries and blueberries for a yummy snack, or throw your favorite berries into a smoothie.
