¿Cómo se dice ‘Happy Hispanic Heritage Month’?
Hackensack’s mayor celebrates Hispanic heritage with local kids (and learns something along the way).
You’re never too old to learn something new! To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 to Oct. 15), Hackensack Mayor Caseen Gaines, a lifelong city resident who taught for 18 years in the Hackensack Public School District, visited Fairmount Elementary School for a special story time. He read Our Celebración! by Susan Middleton Elya, a bilingual picture book with both English and Spanish words, to a third-grade class. And the kids weren’t the only ones who walked away better informed: “Some of the third graders were excited to help me with the proper pronunciation of some of the Spanish-language words in the book,” Gaines reports.
