Sweater weather has arrived, and with it comes the annual closet shuffle: Out with the linen, in with the layers and a whole lot of “Wait, when did I buy this?” As you’re pulling out your fall favorites, you might also find a few pieces that have officially run their course. Conveniently, Monday, Oct. 5 is National Consignment Day—so think twice before tossing anything away.

First up: shopping! Bergen is home to some of the best malls in the country as well as many independent boutiques that cover both classic and trending styles. But our county also boasts great consignment shops where you can score quality clothing and accessories without paying full retail. Check out these shops for a little retail therapy, some of them winners in this year’s Readers’ Choice Awards and all of them highly rated:

If your closet cleanout has left you with things you’re ready to part with, consider donating those items. We’ve rounded up local spots where your gently used clothes can find a new home and do some good along the way. The below locations will accept your unwanted items and resell them, with many shops donating some of proceeds to charities. (Consignment shops, on the other hand, divide sales profit of an item with its original owner.)

  • The Thrift Shop of Hope makes a difference in the lives of children facing serious illnesses. A portion of the profits from every purchase goes directly to supporting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

  • Goodwill NYNJ has donation drop-off bins all around the county, or you can swing by either of their store locations in Elmwood Park or South Hackensack during business hours. In addition to clothing and jewelry, this organization accepts small electronics and houseware items.

  • Hackensack’s branch of The Salvation Army is also an option for donations, and the organization is known for taking larger items such as furniture and electronics. Their needs are always changing, so call 973.742.1126 for more information on what and how to donate.

  • Community thrift shops, such as the one in Midland Park, accept donations of just about anything you can think of, including home décor, books and toys. You can drop things off during business hours on Mondays. Profits benefit 60 local charities all around Bergen County.

  • Donate your gently used items to the National Council of Jewish Women Thrift Shop to support the nonprofit’s community services and advocacy programs.
