Go Fish! 5 Bergen Locales Anglers Love

See what’s biting at these fishing spots around our county.

It’s spring, and the world is coming alive again. Trees are green (and sometimes pink!), flowers are blooming and all of us are ready to get back to our favorite outside activities. We’re pulling out our running shoes, hiking boots, tennis racquets and, yes, our fishing rods. Fishing is a great way to spend the day outside with your family and friends, or a fantastic way to give yourself some time for quiet reflection out in nature.

If you’re grabbing your tackle box this weekend, don’t forget to also grab a New Jersey Freshwater Fishing License, which is required if you’re casting a line in our state. Click the link for specific rate information.

Once you’re ready, head to any Bergen hot spot that New Jersey Fish and Wildlife highlights as having both a good population and desirable species for fishing. Check out these locations:

  • The Ramapo Valley County Reservation’s MacMillan Reservoir in Mahwah offers plenty of space for you to try your hand at catching some bass. The park also has great trails for all levels, so don’t forget those hiking boots!
    * 608 Ramapo Valley Rd, Mahwah, 201.327.3500
  • Overpeck County Park offers everything you crave from the outdoors, and fishing is no exception. Overpeck Lake has designated fishing areas and picnic tables for eating your lunch.
    * 40 Fort Lee Rd., Leonia, 201.336.7275
  • Ridgewood’s Wild Duck Pond, a part of the Saddle River County Park, is nestled next to the road and also boasts a dog park and a playground. It’s a great destination if you want to fish without venturing too deep into the great outdoors.
    * 1133 E. Ridgewood Ave., Ridgewood, 201.336.7275
  • Tucked into a green oasis, the Liberty Park Reflection Pond in Upper Saddle River is accessible from the road and a great spot for beginners (you can snap a great picture with your child’s first catch!). The spot also has idyllic bench swings and a pavilion.
    * Old Stone Church Road, Upper Saddle River
  • The Haworth side of the Oradell Reservoir has 5 miles of maintained trails to enjoy if you’d also craving a walk. The water is filled with large-mouth bass.
    * 200 Lake Shore Dr., Haworth
