How To Honor Veterans Around Bergen
How To Honor Veterans Around Bergen Article Teaser: Active servicepeople and retired veterans can find support every day, and free meals on Nov. 11.

It is, of course, always a good time to support our troops, but we pay special attention to servicemen and women on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. In a time when we’re already taking special care of our neighbors, caring for our active military members, veterans and their families has never been more important.
If you’re looking for a way to help, here are some organizations you can support:
- Bergen County Veterans Services. Our local government supports both servicepeople and their families, from helping with transportation to aiding with employment opportunities to transitional housing for vets in need. In particular, the Tracers program is veteran-led and helps find shelter and jobs for homeless veterans.
- Bergen County Veterans of Foreign Wars. With locations all over the county, this organization connects veterans, runs programs to support men and women serving overseas (such as the Patriot’s Pen letter writing program), curates resources for vets in crisis and does the work to maintain national veterans’ cemeteries.
- Community Hope. This Parsippany-based nonprofit runs the Alfred J. Thomas Home for Veterans in Paramus, which provides transitional housing for veterans in need. It also provides general aid to veterans, servicepeople and their families statewide, focusing on mental health support and permanent housing solutions.
In addition to individual towns’ ceremonies and services and Bergen County’s offer of a free round of golf on one of the six public courses (make sure your call ahead to schedule your tee time), many national chains are offering free or discounted meals on Nov. 11, with military ID.
