It’s Time To Tee Off In Bergen County

The county’s golf courses are now open. Here’s what you need to know and how to get into the swing of things this season.
2 Tee Off

Mother Nature may say otherwise, but golf season is now underway in Bergen. Each of the county’s public courses opened last week, giving golfers a chance to shake off the rust and tee off in the fresh (though somewhat brisk) air. For those waiting all winter to walk the fairways, a little spring chill isn’t a deterrent—especially with local courses ready for action. At Darlington Golf Course in Mahwah, for instance, excited players have been posting about the perfectly manicured and fast greens in between their shots.

What else can Bergen golfers expect this season? At Darlington, the facility’s driving range remains closed for renovations, which are anticipated to wrap up by the end of spring. For Overpeck Golf Course in Teaneck, walk-in registration is currently not accepted because of ongoing technical problems—regulars know all about the site’s spotty internet connection—so signups must be done online in advance. And if you’re not sure which course to play on any given day, the Golf Info line (201.336.7280) can give you the daily weather and condition of each of the county’s six courses: Darlington, Overpeck, Orchard Hills in Paramus, Rockleigh in Rockleigh, Soldier Hill in Emerson and Valley Brook in River Vale.

Golfers of all skill levels can book a tee time at any of Bergen’s courses here; the county’s one-stop-shop website also has more about programs, tournaments and even a spot where you can register a hole-in-one. Reminder if you were one of the 266,000 golfers who signed up in 2021: Your membership registration has expired and you must renew for this year. The annual fees for Bergen residents are $50 for adults (ages 18–61) and $25 for juniors (up to age 17) and seniors (62 and older). Non-residents can sign up for $60.

If you’re not quite ready to play a full round, perhaps stretching out and perfecting your swing at a driving range is the way to start. Though Darlington’s practice location is currently out of commission, the other county courses have driving ranges open during the season, or you can head to one of these nearby sites to put in some work:

Of course, you want to play well, but looking good is also part of the game. Before you hit the links, be sure to stock up on great apparel and gear available at specialty golf stores and pro shops in Bergen County. While it’s a sport for everyone, BERGEN gave some fashion pointers to the guys in our March issue.

Do you have any great photos from the golf course? Email your favorite shot for a chance to be featured as our “Bergen Moment” in an upcoming issue of the magazine.
