8 Local Sweet Spots That Satisfy

Whether you’re planning for Valentine’s Day or just need a treat, these Bergen chocolate shops will warm your heart.
4 Sweet Spots

How do you beat the winter blues? Well, getting out of the house will break your cabin fever. You can also plan a future vacation, set up a cozy gathering with friends and family or hit the gym to help meet your health goals, if you’re feeling ambitious. Sometimes, though, the best way to boost your mood on a cold, gray day is by indulging in something sweet.

Chocolate doesn’t make everything better, but it’s certainly a good start. And now is a great time to give into your sweet tooth—tomorrow, Jan. 31, is National Hot Chocolate Day, and Sunday, Feb. 1, is National Dark Chocolate Day. (Valentine’s Day is also far closer than you think it is, and the time to start picking up gifts for your loved one is now.)

Whether you want milk or dark or some mix of the two, Bergen has you covered. Check out these shops for sweets galore:

  • Conrad’s. This local staple has been making chocolate since 1928, so it’s no surprise they have it down to a science—or that they’ve been our Readers’ Choice winner for Best Candy/Chocolate Shop for three years running.
    *107 Westwood Ave., Westwood, 201.664.2895
  • Chocolates With Love. All manner of Valentine’s Day chocolates awaits you here—milk, white, dark and truffles, with nuts and without. Plus special molded chocolate bars shaped like doctor’s kits, three-dimensional grand pianos and much more.
*47 Interstate Shopping Center, Ramsey, 201.825.0128
  • Critchley’s. You can’t go wrong with the signature chocolate-covered Oreos, but keep an eye out for Critchley’s seasonal hot chocolate bombs, which are colorful, sweet and ideal for a cold afternoon. (This spot was also a Readers’ Choice nod.)
*812 Kinderkamack Rd., River Edge, 201.967.1800
  • Genevieve’s Home Made Chocolates. Pick up everything from dark chocolate truffles to milk chocolate bars to candies with gooey caramel centers. And keep an eye out for Valentine’s Day specials, including personalized messages done in chocolate.
    *174 Ray St., Garfield, 973.233.5149
  • Luxx Chocolat. Everything gets the small-batch and artisan treatment at this Readers’ Choice nod, including the hot chocolate, which you can pick up in carefully pre-measured portions. Just tip into hot milk for the perfect winter sip.
*133 Kinderkamack Rd., Park Ridge, 201.312.7936
  • Meyers House of Sweets. Particularly known for its fudge, you’ll also find hot cocoa bombs, caramels, truffles and bulk gummy candy at this third-generation chocolatier.
    *637 Wyckoff Ave. #17, Wyckoff, 201.848.8200
  • Mindy’s Munchies. From chocolate covered strawberries to fudge to full baskets of chocolate-covered pretzels, you’ll find something for everyone at one of this shop’s two Bergen locations.
*637 Godwin Ave., Midland Park, 201.444.8862; 516 Livingston Street, Norwood, 201.664.1650
  • Trina’s Treats. Cake pops, chocolate covered Rice Krispies Treats and caramel and chocolate apples are just the start here. Fans also rave about their cupcakes and in-store events. (There’s one coming up on Feb. 5 for Galentine’s Day.)
    *296B Stuyvesant Ave., Lyndhurst, 201.804.7659
