Monmouth Health & Life looked into five local hospitals to find out what community outreach services they offer.

When we’re seriously ill or injured, we turn to hospitals to make us well. But did you know Monmouth’s hospitals also provide lots of resources to help us stay well, raise our kids, deal with chronic conditions and lead healthier, more fulfilling lives? Monmouth Health & Life looked into five local hospitals to find out what community outreach services they offer. Here is a sampling of our favorite offerings.

AARP Driver Safety: This in-class driving program will help drivers improve their technique. Participants will receive a certificate at the conclusion of the program.
Beautiful Beginnings: Medical professionals take the guesswork out of childbirth with this comprehensive program covering labor, delivery and everything in between. Participants will take a tour of the maternity unit too.
Controlling Your Blood Pressure: Have a problem with high blood pressure? Drop by to learn about the signs, symptoms, causes and treatments.
Family and Friends CPR: In addition to CPR, participants will learn how to prevent the most common fatal injuries in children and how to handle a choking infant or child.
Joyful Heart Tea: Shaddy Younan, M.D., lectures on the latest news in the world of heart health over a steaming cup of tea and assorted heart-healthy treats.
Look Good…Feel Better: This program, presented by the American Cancer Society, teaches makeup and hair tips to help cancer patients look and feel their best.
Lung Cancer: Attend this class to find out about treatment options and side-effect management programs for lung cancer. Participants will learn how to improve their quality of life during and after diagnosis.
Nursing Your Newborn: This class helps mothers provide the best care for their new addition. Participants will learn about the benefits of breastfeeding and develop strategies to make the experience as enjoyable as possible.
Rheumatoid Arthritis: Join a certified medical professional for a discussion about diagnosis and treatment options.
Safe Sitter: If you like kids, you’ll love this program. Designed for aspiring young babysitters, “Safe Sitter” provides valuable information on the basics of caring for children.
Self-Defense Exercises: Get stronger and more confident in this interactive program led by a black-belt instructor. Learn how to use balance and leverage to defend yourself against most attacks.
Stop Smoking with Hypnosis: Eager to quit smoking but don’t know where to start? Attend this seminar to learn how hypnotherapy can help you kick the habit.
Thyroid Cancer Support Group: Open to thyroid cancer patients, survivors and their families, this program, presented by the Department of Surgery and Medicine and the nonprofit Thyroid Cancer Survivors’ Association, counsels those suffering with the disease.
Vascular Screening: This 15-minute screening uses noninvasive technology to determine your risk for heart disease and stroke.
Weight-Loss Surgery–The Facts: In this program, several licensed professionals will provide information on the positive aspects of weight-loss surgery.

Brains N’ Motion: Every parent wants the best for his or her child. Why not start at an early age? This class teaches parents and caregivers of children ages 2–6 months how to use movement, song and play to stimulate a baby’s physical, mental and social skills.
Diabetes Support Group–Holiday Madness and Eating: Are you diabetic and afraid to partake in traditional holiday feasts? Fear no more. A dietitian suggests favorites you can enjoy at this time of the year. Topics change monthly.
Girls Grow Up: Ease your daughter through the process of puberty; together, you’ll meet with a health educator to discuss the physical, social, chemical and emotional changes that women experience as they grow. Age range: 9–12
Heartsaver CPR for Teens: Tweens and teens, ages 12–17, will learn how to perform CPR on people of all ages.
Lessons from the Kitchen: Cancer-Fighting Cooking Demo: Eat your way to a healthier lifestyle with this dietitian-led cooking class. Learn techniques to whip up healthy meals for the entire family. Topics change monthly.
Little Professors: Give your kids the edge they need in preschool; 3–5-year-olds will learn social and communication skills.
Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) Screening: Learn about your risk of developing PAD. Physicians will be on hand to conduct screenings and review the results with participants.
Sibling Preparation Class: A new baby brings many changes and no one is affected more than young children. Don’t leave your little ones out! This program, designed for 2–10-year-olds, helps kids transition to the role as older sibs.

Alzheimer’s Caregiver Support Group: Alzheimer’s disease can be a scary diagnosis. Take advantage of this program designed for caregivers and family members coping with the disease.
Breast Education and Screening Program: Early detection is the key to conquering breast cancer, and this program offers free breast examinations to help women stay healthy and cancer-free. Mammograms are also offered, with results being read the same day.
Moms of Multiples Support Group: Learn from and talk with other mothers who know exactly what you’re going through. Led by a registered nurse and a mom of multiples.
One-Day Childbirth: Receive five weeks’ worth of childbirth preparation in one day with this comprehensive program that is ideal for busy couples.
Pediatric Preoperative Tour: Take the fear out of your child’s upcoming surgery with a tour of the Cranmer Ambulatory Surgery Center. Kids receive hands-on experience with the medical equipment and visitation areas they will see on the day of their surgery.
Understanding Your Toddler: Learn real, parent-tested techniques and coping strategies in this class. Topics include communication, discipline, building confidence and learning patience.
