Has winter hibernation added a few inches to your waistline? Get down and give us 20! Now that you’re warmed up, enlist in a boot-camp exercise class and get ready to be whipped into shape. Available at many local gyms, these group workouts combine calisthenics, such as lunges and sit-ups, with military-style drills and anaerobic moves, like sprints and jumping rope. The highly intense interval-training workout burns 600 to 900 calories in a standard 60-minute class, making the exercise popular with the celebrity set, including Christina Applegate and Ali Larter, who use it to maintain their chiseled, Hollywood-approved bodies.

The team-based workouts also promote camaraderie among students, who are able to motivate and inspire one another. Little equipment is needed for the exercises, which mostly use the athlete’s own body weight as resistance, making boot camp an approachable and affordable way for people of all fitness levels and lifestyles to get in shape.
