NJ’s Roller Coasters Are Calling
A seat aboard an exciting ride during August’s dog days can provide much-needed summer thrills.
If you and your crew are looking for something to do before Labor Day weekend festivities, there are plenty of items on our summer bucket list to check out. Here’s another idea: Do your part to celebrate National Roller Coaster Day, Aug. 16 (or any day you’d like), and experience a few thrills with family and friends.
The Bergen County Fair runs through Aug. 18 at Overpeck Park in Leonia. There, guests can ride a host of rides and coasters—some big, some small—as well as play games, win prizes, enjoy carnival food, listen to music and much more. Admission is free, but ride tickets are extra.
Can’t make it the to the Bergen County Fair this weekend? Here are other places where you can ride a roller coaster and get a little adrenaline rush.
American Dream, East Rutherford. The retail and entertainment complex is home to Nickelodeon Universe, the largest indoor theme park in the Western Hemisphere. The park has 10 rides and roller coasters that are suitable for all ages, from kids to adults! For a calmer ride that’s just as fun, the Dream Wheel is an outdoor Ferris wheel with 27 climate-controlled gondolas with views of the NYC skyline.
Six Flags Great Adventure, Jackson. About an hour and a half from Bergen is this mega theme park, which features 14 world-class roller coasters (we love “El Toro” and the “Jersey Devil”!) and numerous other rides, games and activities. Not a thrill seeker? The drive-through safari next door gives visitors up-close-and-personal encounters with amazing animals.
Mountain Creek, Vernon. This massive water park, about an hour away, has several slides that can get anyone’s blood pumping. For instance, the “Colorado River” gives riders the feel of navigating the white waters and waterfalls of this canyon-carving river. Then there’s “Bomb’s Away,” a steep slide that ends with an 18-foot free fall into a pool.
